The campaign journal keeps the story of your game: session recaps, notes, and a page for every person, place and thing the party meets.

For: Game Masters and players · Plan: Starter · 4 minutes · What it's for: Campaign journal

Long campaigns are hard to remember: who was the innkeeper with the scar, and what did the party promise the duke three sessions ago? The journal is where your group writes it down, inside the game, so anyone can look it up mid-session. The Game Master (GM) keeps private notes; everyone shares the players' journal. Write a short recap after each session and tag names as they come up: the journal builds a page for each one.

Plan: the journal needs Starter or Pro on the account that opens it, player or GM.

Open the journal

Click Journal on the tool rail, or press J. The Campaign Journal opens.

It has four views: Browse, Timeline, Notes and Entities.

  • Browse lists the days that have entries; pick one to read its entries beside the list.
  • Timeline lays dated entries out along a line in date order. It starts with major events only; zoom in to see the rest.
  • Notes holds entries with no date.
  • Entities holds the pages for people, places and things (see below).

Real-world and In-world switch between notes about your sessions and notes dated inside the game world. A real-world entry is about the session you played, such as "Session 12: the party reached the swamp". An in-world entry is dated by your game's own calendar, such as the day the city fell.

As the GM you also get All, Player and GM, to see everything, only what players see, or only your private notes. Players always see the players' journal.

Write an entry

An entry is one page of the journal: a session recap, a letter the party found, a note about a rumour.

  1. Click Write the first Real-world entry (or, once there are entries, start a new one).
  2. Write in the editor. The toolbar has Bold, Italic, Heading, lists, Quote, Link and Image, and Preview shows the result.
  3. Turn on Major event for the big moments. They're marked with a star, and they're the ones the Timeline shows before you zoom in.
  4. As the GM, turn on Private to keep an entry to yourself.
  5. Click Save entry.

Turn off Save as Timeline Entry to save it as a note instead, with no date. Dated entries appear on the Timeline; undated ones are notes.

Players can edit any entry in the players' journal. The GM's own entries are the GM's alone.

People, places and things

The journal calls each person, place or thing it keeps track of an entity. Tag one in your writing and it gets its own page, so you can look up everything the party knows about it in one place.

Select some text in an entry and click Tag entity. Pick what it is, such as NPC (a non-player character, someone the GM plays), Location, Faction, Item or Quest, then link it to one you already have or create a new one.

Each entity gets its own page, with a cover and a portrait, other names it goes by, its own notes, and a list of every entry that mentions it. Merge another combines two pages that turned out to be the same.

Find them again with Search entities… in the Entities view.

Share to chat

Sharing posts an entry, or part of one, in chat as a card, so people can read it without opening the journal. Click Share on an entry, or select some text and click Share to chat. Chat shows a card with Open in journal.

Quick notes from chat

Type /journal and your note in chat. Players' notes go to the players' journal. The GM's go to the private GM journal; start with player: to post to the shared one instead.

Move a private note to the players (GM)

Use this when the party learns something you had kept secret, such as the villain's real name. On one of your private entries, click Transfer. It moves into the players' journal and leaves your notes. This can't be undone.

In-world dates

In In-world, entries carry dates from your game's calendar. On Pro, with the world clock running, new entries are stamped with the in-game date and hour. See World clock.
