Make your own decks of cards, deal them into players' hands, and play them onto the board for everyone to see.

Some games use real cards: a deck of many things that can change a character's fate with one draw, a fortune-teller's tarot reading, loot, or cards for initiative (the order everyone acts in during a fight). A deck in RollQuest is a set of cards you make yourself. The Game Master (GM) deals cards into players' hands, the cards each player holds, like dealing at a real table, and a played card appears on the board where everyone can see it. Use them when a card is more fun to hold than a line in chat, such as handing a player a mysterious letter or letting the party draw their rewards.

Plan: decks are on Starter and Pro. Your plan sets how many decks you can have, and how many cards each can hold: see the pricing page.

Make a deck (GM)

  1. Open the menu (the three lines at the top left) and click Decks under Game Master tools, then New Deck.
  2. Name it and choose how it deals: One card → one player, or Same card → multiple players.
  3. Open the deck and click + Add Card for each card. Set the Card size for the whole deck.

One card → one player works like a real deck: each card exists once, so a card in one player's hand can't be dealt to another. With Same card → multiple players, every card stays available, so several players can hold the same card.

Your decks belong to your account rather than to one game, so you can use a deck in more than one game. A deck is used in a game once it's attached: in the deck's menu, choose Attach to game (or Detach from game).

Deal cards (GM)

Dealing puts cards into players' hands, ready for them to play.

  1. In Decks, open Hand Management and turn on Player Hands. This lets players hold and play cards in the current scene.
  2. Pick a deck.
  3. Choose Random to deal from the top, or Pick to choose the cards.
  4. Set Cards each and click Deal to the players (or Deal Selected).

Reshuffle has two choices: Reshuffle pile refills the cards left to deal and leaves hands and the board alone, and Collect & reshuffle takes every card back from hands and the board first. All Player Hands shows what everyone holds, and lets you take a card back.

Play cards

Playing a card shows it on the board, so everyone sees it at once. Open Cards at the bottom of the board.

  • Players: your Hand tab holds your cards. Select some and click Play Selected.
  • GM: each attached deck has its own tab. Select cards and click Play to Board.

Open a card to Play Card, Flip it, or Send to another player, who can Accept or Reject it. A played card shows on the board for everyone, and the GM can Return to deck from there, which puts it at the bottom of its deck.

How long cards stay on the board

In Game settings > Board > Cards, Card display sets how long a played card stays up: from 5 seconds to Keep until dismissed. Clear all cards removes them all at once.

Players see the Cards bar when the GM has left Cards Bar on (Game settings > Players), they have a character, and they hold at least one card.
