Classic and physics dice
Every roll is decided one of two ways: a classic die shows a fair random number, and a physics die lands wherever its shape takes it.
Most dice in RollQuest are classic dice. Some dice designs from the marketplace turn one die into a 3D model, such as the Goblin Box d6 or the Mimic Chest's treasure chest d6, and that die is a physics die. A design's marketplace page says which kind each of its dice is, and how fairly each physics die rolls.
Classic dice
When you roll a classic die, RollQuest picks the result with a fair random number first, then throws the die so it lands showing that number. Every number is equally likely, whatever the die looks like, and the animation never changes the result.
Physics dice
A physics die is a 3D model rolled by real physics. Nothing is picked in advance: the model tumbles across the board, and whichever face ends up on top is the result. Its shape decides the odds, as a real die's does, so a lumpy or lopsided model can favour some numbers over others.
- Everyone at the table gets the same result. The roller's screen decides it, and everyone else sees the dice replay to the same number.
- If the model hasn't finished loading when you roll, on a slow connection for example, that die rolls as a classic die for that roll.
- The rest of the design's dice stay classic: a design with a physics d20 rolls classic d4s, d6s and the rest.
How it rolls
Before a physics die goes on sale, it's thrown 5,000 times and the results are compared with a perfect die. Its marketplace page shows the result under How it rolls:
| Label | What it means |
|---|---|
| Fair | Every number came up about as often as on a perfect die: the differences are no bigger than luck makes them. |
| Slightly uneven | Some numbers come up a little more or less often than on a perfect die, but none by more than a fifth. |
| Loaded | At least one number comes up more than a fifth more often, or less often, than on a perfect die. |
Under the label, a sentence names the number that is furthest off, such as "The 13 comes up 94% less often than on a perfect d20." A bar for each number shows how often it came up, against a dashed line for a perfect die.
The page also says which of the design's dice are classic. A design with no physics dice says its dice are all classic, so every number is equally likely.
Use a dice design
Once a design is yours, the GM chooses it in Game Settings > Board > Dice design, and a player under Your Dice Design behind the cog on the tool rail. Everyone at the table sees it on your rolls. See Dice designs.
