Roll a d4

A d4 is the small four-sided pyramid. In D&D 5e it is the damage die of a dagger, a sling and a dart, of the Magic Missile spell (1d4 + 1 force damage per dart) and of the Bless and Bane spells, which add or subtract a d4 from attack rolls and saving throws.

A d4 rolls a whole number from 1 to 4, each equally likely, so its average is 2.5. Rolling several at once and adding them up (2d4, 3d4) makes results bunch around the middle, which is why damage rolls of many dice feel steadier than a single die.
