An Above VTT alternative that stands on its own

AboveVTT is a genuinely clever piece of work: a free browser extension that turns D&D Beyond into a virtual tabletop, using the sheets and content you already own there. For a table already invested in D&D Beyond, it's the cheapest way to get maps and fog into your game.

A full 5e character sheet in RollQuest beside the board: Kagra Stonefist's hit points, armour class, ability scores, saving throws, skills and weapons, all built from content that comes with the app

The short version

Above is an extension; RollQuest is the tabletop. Above's content is whatever your players have bought on D&D Beyond. RollQuest ships SRD 5e and 5.5e with every account, runs on its own servers, and is nobody's plugin - so it doesn't break when another company ships a redesign.

If your group has already bought the books on D&D Beyond and likes it there, Above is free and good and you should use it.

Where RollQuest is the better choice

It isn't built on someone else's site. An unofficial extension lives at the mercy of the platform it attaches to. When D&D Beyond changes, extensions break, and they break mid-campaign rather than at a convenient moment. RollQuest is a product with its own front and back end.

Content is included. SRD 5.1 and 5.2.1 ship with every account - spells, monsters, items and class features - so a new player with no purchases can roll up a character and play. You can read the whole spell list right now without an account. With Above, a player who owns nothing on D&D Beyond has very little.

Nobody installs an extension. Above needs Chrome or Firefox and an extension installed per person. RollQuest is a link.

The GM tools are properly part of it. A map builder, board layers, a campaign journal, cards and decks, a world clock. Above is focused on getting a map and tokens in front of a D&D Beyond game, which it does well and doesn't try to exceed.

It's supported. There's someone to email.

Where Above VTT is the better choice

You already own everything on D&D Beyond. That's the real argument and it's a strong one. If your group has bought the books, Above uses them directly and RollQuest can't.

You want official D&D content, legally. RollQuest ships the SRD - which is a subset. Above reads whatever you've paid for.

It's free, with no tiers. No subscription at all.

Your players already live in D&D Beyond. Same sheets, same dice, same place. No migration.

Frequently asked questions

Is AboveVTT official?

No. It's a community-made extension, not made or supported by Wizards of the Coast or D&D Beyond.

Can RollQuest use my D&D Beyond content?

No. There's no integration. RollQuest ships the SRD, and you can add your own material as content packs.

Do my players need to buy anything to play in RollQuest?

No. Players join free, and the SRD content everyone needs is included.

Is RollQuest a browser extension?

No, it's a website. Open a link and you're in.

Which has better maps?

RollQuest, on tooling - walls, doors, lighting, layers and a map builder. Above is designed to get a map on screen quickly rather than to build one.
