Every character sheet in a game belongs to someone: here's who can see it, who can change it, and how the Game Master (GM) hands sheets out.

For: Game Masters and players · Plan: Free · 2 minutes

Most sheets are the players' characters, each played by one person, but the GM keeps sheets too, for a villain or a shopkeeper. Assigning a sheet to a player is how it becomes their character: they can open it, roll from it and change it, and other players can't. You'll need this page when a new player joins, when the GM has prepared characters for a one-off adventure, or when you wonder why you can't open a friend's sheet.

Assign a sheet (GM)

In Character Sheets on the tool rail (the column of icons on the right edge of the screen), open a sheet's menu and choose Edit sheet.

  • Assigned Player hands the sheet to a player. None (GM reference) keeps it for you: an NPC's sheet, say. An NPC (non-player character) is anyone in the story the GM plays.
  • Primary character marks the sheet that drives the player's token, their character's figure on the board: its hit points and stats show on the token. A player with several sheets has one marked Primary.

Duplicate or delete a sheet

In a sheet's menu, Duplicate makes a copy, a quick start for a similar character, and Delete removes it. The GM and whoever made the sheet can do both.

Sheets waiting for approval (GM)

Bring own character sheets in Game Settings decides whether players can bring characters from their own account into your game. If it's set to Needs approval, a sheet a player brings in, or a ready-made character they take, shows Pending. Only you can see it until you click Approve. Reject removes it.

Freeze characters (GM)

Turn on Freeze characters in Game Settings to stop players changing their characters: no level-ups, new ability scores or re-running setup. Use it when characters should stay as they are, for example in a one-off adventure where you made the characters. They can still play: hit points, spell slots, inventory and money all work. You can still change anything. Locking the game (Lock Game in the menu) freezes characters too. See Game settings.
