An asset boundary lets a movable object, such as a boulder or a cart, block sight and light, and a boundary wall stops tokens but not sight.

For: Game Masters · Plan: Free · 3 minutes

An asset is a picture you, the Game Master (GM), place on top of the map, such as a boulder, a pillar or a cart. Walls are drawn on the map itself and stay where you drew them, but a boundary is drawn on the asset, so it blocks sight and light wherever you place the asset: roll the boulder across the tunnel mouth and the tunnel beyond is hidden from the party. A boundary wall is the opposite case, for places tokens can see across but not cross, like a cliff edge or a railing.

Draw an asset's boundary

  1. Open the Asset Library (click Assets in the menu, three lines, top left), open the asset's options and choose Edit Asset.
  2. Click the Boundaries tab.
  3. Click to start a line, then click at each corner.
  4. Finish it:
    • Finish (or Esc, or Cmd+D) stops where you are.
    • Close Loop (or Shift+Cmd+D) joins it back to the start.
    • Right-click cancels the line you're drawing.
  5. Click Save Changes.

Drag a corner to reshape a line. Del removes the last point, and Undo, Redo and Clear All do what they say. Scroll to zoom, Fit shows the whole asset, and Shift-drag (or the middle mouse button) moves around. The counter shows how many segments you've drawn. On Windows, use Ctrl where these say Cmd.

The boundary belongs to the asset, so every copy of it on the board has the same one, and a change reaches them all.

What an asset boundary blocks

  • Sight, fog and light, always, like a wall. Players' tokens can't see past it, so the fog of war stays over what's behind it.
  • Movement, only when Block Wall Passage is on (see below).

It stops nothing while the asset is on the GM layer (the board layer only you can see) or isn't in the current phase (another version of the scene's map). A token high enough to be up on a roof isn't stopped either. See Elevation and roofs.

Boundary walls

A boundary wall blocks movement but not sight or light: tokens can see across it but can't walk through it.

In Walls mode (choose Walls in the Mode menu, the tab at the top centre of the board), right-click a wall and choose Convert to boundary. It shows as a dashed line. Convert to wall turns it back. A boundary wall can't be one-way.

Like any wall, it stops tokens only when Block Wall Passage is on.

Block Wall Passage

Block Wall Passage decides whether walls stop tokens moving. It's off until you turn it on, so tokens can go anywhere. Turn it on:

  • in the Grid settings (choose Grid in the Mode menu), for the scene you're on now, or
  • in a scene's settings, so it's on each time that scene loads.

When it's on, walls, closed and secret doors, asset boundaries and boundary walls all stop tokens being dragged or moved with the arrow keys, yours included. Players can't teleport through them either; you can.
