Fog of war
Fog of war hides the map until your players' tokens can see it. With walls drawn, it clears only where each character has line of sight, so every corner can hold a surprise.
Turn fog on
- Hover over the Mode menu and choose Fog of War.
- Switch fog on with the toggle in the section header.
Each scene can have fog on or off: open Scenes, open the scene's settings, and use Enable Fog of War in Scene Options.
Choose how fog behaves
Open Game Settings from the tool rail, go to Board, then Lighting & fog, and pick a Fog of war style. Click Save Settings.
| Style | What it does | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamic (resets when moving) | Fog closes in again when players leave an area | Tense exploration, darkness, stealth |
| Persistent (stays visible) | Areas stay revealed once seen, for each player | Dungeon crawls where players keep their map |
| Static (GM-controlled) | The map starts dark and you reveal it by hand | Theatre of the mind, maps without walls |
Darkvision and other senses only work with Dynamic fog.
Reveal or hide by hand
Dynamic and Persistent fog:
- Reveal and Hide paint fog away or back with a brush. Click the button again, or press Esc, to stop.
- Reveal All clears the whole map. Reset brings the fog back everywhere. Both ask first, because they can't be undone.
Static fog has a toolbox. Pick an Action (Reveal or Hide) and a Shape:
- Brush: freehand.
- Circle and Square: drag out a shape.
- Draw: click to add points, double-click to close.
- Cell: click or drag across grid squares to clear whole squares at a time. Turn Show Grid on to use it.
The static tools work with GM View on.
Clear fog square by square
Fog clearing decides how a token's sight clears fog, in any style:
- Circle: a smooth radius.
- Grid: whole squares (or hexes).
- Block: a block of squares round the token: a square on a square grid, a hexagon on a hex grid.
With Grid or Block, choose when a square counts as seen: Centre (its centre is visible) or Any part.
On a hex grid this clears whole hexes, which is what a hex crawl needs. Hex grids need Starter or Pro.
What you see and what players see
With GM View on, you see the fog at half strength so you can still work on the map. Turn GM View off to see it as your players do. See GM view and player view.
If something's wrong
Players see through walls. The walls aren't drawn yet, or there's a gap. Check in Walls mode.
A player sees nothing. They have no token assigned, or it's in darkness with no light. See Lighting.
