Map builder
Paint your own battle maps in RollQuest: rooms, corridors, doors, windows and roofs, on as many floors as you need, then use one as a scene's background.
The map builder is a painting tool for when you have no map for a place: the party heads for a farmhouse you never planned, or you want a dungeon laid out your way. A battle map is a top-down picture of a place, divided into squares, that tokens (the pieces for characters and creatures) move across. What you paint becomes a picture, and exporting it turns it into a background: the map under a scene, one place in your game, exactly like a map you upload.
Plan: the map builder is on Pro.
Beta: the map builder is still rolling out, so it may not be on your account yet.
Open it
Open the menu and click Maps. New map starts one; your saved maps are listed to Open, Rename or Delete.
Build a map
Pick a tool on the left, or press its key. Props are the objects on a map, such as barrels and crates.
| Key | Tool | Key | Tool |
|---|---|---|---|
| V | Select | C | Corridor |
| F | Terrain paint | W | Wall |
| P | Polygon fill | D | Door |
| T | Texture fill | N | Window |
| R | Room sculpt | K | Routes & tracks |
| B | Blend brush | Q | Scatter props |
| H | Roof | J | Shadow paint |
| I | Smart building | E | Erase |
1, 2 and 3 set the brush size, + and - zoom, and Space pans. Cmd+Z (Ctrl+Z on Windows) undoes.
Map size sets the width and height in squares, up to 64 by 48.
Floors
Floors are the levels of a building, such as a cellar, a ground floor and an attic, and each one is painted separately.
Use the floor bar to Add blank floor, Duplicate floor, rename or delete one, and move between Floor above and Floor below.
Your own props
Click Upload to add your own prop images (PNG, WebP or JPEG, up to 4 MB). They're kept under My Uploads.
Save and use it
Click Save the first time; after that it saves as you go. Then choose Export > Export to background to add the map to this game's Background Library as a picture, or export it as a PNG, WebP or JPEG image to download.
If the scene you're on has no map yet, the exported map goes onto the board by itself. Otherwise, open Background from the menu and click the map to make it the background of the scene you're on (see Upload a map). The exported picture is 100 pixels a square, which matches RollQuest's default grid Cell Size, so check it with Line up the grid if you've changed that scene's grid.
The walls and doors you paint are part of the picture: on the board they don't block sight or movement. To make them work, draw them again on the board with Walls and Doors.
