Your first session as a player

This takes you through your first session as a player, from opening the invite to rolling your first check. It takes about ten minutes.

Before you start

  • A computer with Chrome or Edge, or an Android phone with Chrome. A mouse with a right button and a scroll wheel makes the board easier to move around.
  • The invite link or email from your Game Master (GM).

1. Join the game

Open the invite and sign in. Join from an invite link and Join from an email invitation cover each way in. Then click Join Game on the game's card on your dashboard.

2. Take the tour

The first time you open a game, a short tour starts. It points out the table, the tool rail, your character sheet, chat, the dice tray, the Shortcut Bar and the modes. To see it again, click Help at the bottom of the tool rail, then Replay Tutorial.

3. Get your character

Your GM assigns you a character. Until they do, the board shows No character assigned, and it updates by itself when they assign one.

If your GM lets players bring their own characters, you can build one yourself: click Character Sheets on the tool rail, then New Sheet > Build your own. Your GM still assigns you a token on the board.

4. Find your token and move it

  • Press Tab to jump the view to each party token in turn, and Shift+Tab to go back.
  • Drag your token to move it. The arrow keys move it one step at a time.
  • Look around the map: hold the right mouse button and drag to pan, and scroll to zoom. On a phone, pinch to zoom and drag with two fingers to pan.

You can only move your own token. In a battle you can only move on your turn, and if MOVEMENT LOCKED shows at the top, your GM has paused movement for everyone.

5. Roll some dice

  1. Click the d20 at the top left, under the menu (Dice menu). The Dice tray opens.
  2. Click D20.
  3. Click Roll.

The die lands on the board for everyone, and the total shows for the whole table. You can also type /roll 1d20+5 in chat. See Roll dice.

Note: the dice tray needs a character assigned to you. Before that, clicking Roll does nothing, but /roll in chat works.

6. Say hello in chat

Click Chat on the tool rail, type a message and press Enter (Shift+Enter starts a new line). To whisper to your GM, type /w gm and your message. See Chat.

7. Open your sheet

Click Character Sheets on the tool rail, open In Game, and click your character. Or right-click your token and choose Open Character Sheet. Click a skill or a saving throw to roll it. See Your sheet at the table.
