Create a character
The character builder walks you through a new character one step at a time: name and level, class, background, species, ability scores, hit points, money, gear and spells.
Note: the builder works with the 5e and 5.5e game systems. In a game with no system you get a plain sheet to fill in yourself.
Start a new character
- Click Character Sheets on the tool rail, then New Sheet. The New character sheet window opens.
- Choose Build your own. (Select from Library gives you a ready-made character for this game instead, as your own copy.)
- Type a Title: the character's name.
- As the Game Master (GM), you can hand it to a player straight away with Assign to Player (optional), or leave it on None (GM reference sheet).
- Click Create Sheet. The builder opens.
If your GM asked you to bring a character, your dashboard shows Build my character instead. Each click starts a new character, so click it once. See Join from an email invitation.
Your plan sets how many character sheets you can have (see pricing). At the limit you see Character sheet limit reached.
Move through the steps
- The top of the builder shows which step you're on and how many there are. Click the progress bar to jump back to an earlier step, or forward to one you've already done.
- Next moves on and Back goes back. A required step has to be filled in before Next works. Optional steps also have Skip.
- Start Again clears every choice and goes back to step 1.
- Cancel leaves the builder. Everything you've picked is kept, and you can carry on later.
- If you change an earlier step, RollQuest asks before it resets the steps after it.
On a phone the builder fills the screen.
The steps
For a 5e character:
Name Your Character: the Character Name and a Starting Level from 1 to 20. Most games start at Level 1. A higher level builds your class up to that level.
Choose Your Class.
Choose Your Background.
Choose Your Race (5e) or Choose Your Species (5.5e).
Set Ability Scores: click Open Ability Allocator and pick a method:
- Standard Array: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10 and 8 to place.
- Point Buy: 27 points, scores from 8 to 15.
- Rolled (4d6): roll four d6 and drop the lowest, six times. Re-roll starts again.
- Manual: type them in.
Enter the base scores: bonuses from your species and background are added for you. Click Confirm.
Roll Hit Points: level 1 gets the most the hit die can roll. For every level above 1, choose Fixed (the average), Roll or Manual.
Starting Funds (5e only): your class's starting money is rolled for you, for example 5d4 × 10 gp. Change the amounts, or Roll for Coinage again.
Add Weapons (Optional) and Add Starting Equipment (Optional): prices come out of your starting money, and anything you can't afford is marked Can't afford.
Edit Spells (optional): search for spells and pick them, up to your class's limits.
Click Finish on the last step. If you picked items on it, the button says how many it will add.
Extra steps
If you start above level 1, or your class gives you a choice (a subclass or an ability score improvement, say), extra steps appear, named after the level and class. Click Make these choices → on each one.
Going over the limits (GM)
Players can't pick more than they can afford, or more spells than their class allows. As the GM you can: RollQuest asks you to confirm, and the button shows (GM override).
