Edit your sheet
Change the numbers on your sheet by hand: a magic item that bumps your armour class, a skill you've trained up, a score the builder got wrong.
The character builder and Level Up fill in most of your sheet, but play throws up changes they don't cover: a +1 shield found in a dungeon raises your armour class (the number an enemy's attack has to reach to hit you), or the Game Master (GM) lets you learn a new skill between adventures. Edit mode is where you make those changes yourself. You change the plain values, and the sheet keeps working out everything that depends on them.
Turn on Edit
Open your sheet in the Form View, the sheet's standard tabbed layout (see Form and Canvas views), and click Edit at the top. Click Done when you've finished.
In Edit mode:
- Plain values become editable. Each gets the control that suits it: a switch for on or off, a stepper for a small range, or a number box.
- Worked-out values, such as a modifier made from a score, stay as they are: change the score and they follow. A modifier is the bonus a score adds to your rolls, so a higher score can mean a bigger bonus on every roll that uses it.
- Skills: click a skill's proficiency dot to step it through not proficient, proficient and expertise. A skill is something your character can be good at, such as Stealth or Persuasion. Proficient means trained in it: you add your proficiency bonus, +2 at level 1 rising to +6 by level 17, to its rolls. Expertise doubles that bonus.
Level up and rebuild
The Edit toolbar also holds:
- Level Up. See Level up.
- Re-run character setup: opens the character builder again at step 1, with your choices kept, so you can change one without starting over. It needs a game system, the set of rules the game plays by (see Game systems).
Choose a layout (Starter and Pro)
A layout is the arrangement of the sheet: which parts it shows, and where. If your sheet has more than one layout, pick one under Which layout this character wears: a full layout or a shorter one, say. Switching layout only hides and shows parts of the sheet. It never deletes a value.
To change the layout itself, click Layout in the Edit toolbar. See Customise a sheet layout.
When you can't edit
- You can edit a sheet you're assigned, and the GM can edit every sheet in their game. See Who can see and change a sheet.
- If the GM has turned on Freeze characters, a setting that keeps characters as they are, you can't level up, re-run setup or change ability scores. Hit points, spell slots, inventory and money still work.
