Play a character on its own
Open a character from your dashboard and roll from their sheet with no game running: the sheet fills the screen and keeps a list of your recent rolls.
You don't need a game, a map or a Game Master (GM) to use a character sheet. Open one from your dashboard, the page you see after you sign in, to try out a character you've just built, practise rolling before your first session, or check your numbers between sessions. The sheet works as it does at the table, with the same rolls, the same Edit mode and the same Level Up. The difference is that there's no board behind it and no chat, so your rolls stay on your screen.
Open a character from your dashboard
- Character Sheets: on your dashboard, click Character Sheets. In the Sheet Library, click Open on one of your own characters, or Edit sheet on a character in one of your games. See Your account library.
- Characters (beta): at the top of your dashboard's list of games, switch from Games to Characters and click a character. See The Characters view below.
A finished character opens in the Form View, the sheet's standard tabbed layout (see Form and Canvas views). A character you haven't finished building opens in the character builder, on the first step you haven't answered (see Create a character).
Close the sheet with the cross at the top right and your dashboard comes back.
Roll and look back at your rolls
Click a skill, a saving throw, an ability or an attack to roll it, and right-click it (long-press on a phone) for the roll options, as at the table (see Your sheet at the table). The total shows in the box at the bottom of the sheet for 10 seconds, and your 3D dice roll on your screen.
There's no chat here to keep a record, so the sheet keeps one itself:
- Click Rolls in the sheet's header, next to Edit. On a phone it's the button with three lines. The number on it is how many rolls are in the list.
- The Recent rolls list opens, newest first. Each roll shows what you rolled and the total, such as Arcana: 15, the time, and a line for each die and bonus, such as 1d20: [12] and + 1 → Arcana.
- Click Rolls again, the cross, or press Esc to close it.
What's different without a game
- The sheet fills the screen. On a computer the Form View takes the whole window, with no strip of board left showing at the top. On a phone it fills the screen, as it always does.
- Your rolls stay on your screen. Nothing is posted to chat and nobody else sees your dice. That's true for a character who belongs to one of your games too: opened from the dashboard, their rolls don't reach that game's chat. To roll for the table, go into the game and open your sheet there.
- There's no In Game. In-game mode floats the sheet over the board, and there's no board here, so the Form View doesn't offer In Game.
- Items can't be shared to chat. The speech-bubble button at the end of each item row is gone (see Inventory and money).
- Your dice look like yours. Your rolls use the design you picked under Your dice on your profile, or standard dice if you haven't picked one. See Your profile.
Everything else works as usual: Edit mode, Level Up, hit points, spell slots, coins and the Canvas view. Your changes are saved to the character you opened. A copy you've already brought into a game is a separate sheet, so changes made here don't reach it.
The Characters view
Beta: the dashboard's Characters view, with its New Character button, is still rolling out, so it may not be on your account yet.
The Characters view puts every character you have on your dashboard, one card each, newest first: characters in your account and characters in your games alike.
- On your dashboard, click Characters in the switch at the top of the list of games. (Without the switch, the list is headed Your Games.) RollQuest remembers which one you picked, in this browser.
- Click a character's card, or its Play button, to open it. An unfinished character has Continue setup instead, which opens the character builder.
New Character, in place of New Game at the top of the list, opens the Start a character screen. See Create a character.
Which characters are listed
- Every character in your account library (see Your account library).
- In the games you run or play in, every character assigned to you and every character you made. As the GM, that includes the sheets you made for non-player characters (NPCs) and for your players.
- A character waiting for its GM's approval isn't listed until the GM approves it.
A character's card, part by part
| Part | What it shows or does |
|---|---|
| Picture | The character's portrait, or their initials on a plain circle. |
| Name | The character's name, or Unnamed character. |
| Edition | 5.5e (2024 rules), 5E (2014 rules), or the name of another game system. |
| Ready to play or Setup not finished | Whether the character builder has been finished. An unfinished character's card has a dashed border. |
| In and a game's name, or Not in a game yet | Where the character lives: in one of your games, or only in your account. |
| Play or Continue setup | Opens the character, on its own. Clicking anywhere on the picture or the name does the same. |
| Three-dot menu | Hover text More actions. Bring to a game (only for a character not in a game) opens the Sheet Library, where you click Bring to game on the character. Delete asks first, in a window headed Delete character that names the character and says it can't be undone: Confirm deletes it for good, Cancel keeps it. |
In a narrow window, the buttons move under the name, and a long name or game name is cut short.
Messages on the Characters view
| Message | What it means |
|---|---|
| No characters yet | You have no characters. Build a character opens the Start a character screen. |
| Loading your characters... | The list is loading. |
| Your characters could not be loaded. | The list didn't load. Close the dashboard and open it again, or reload the page. |
| Could not open that character. | The character didn't open. Try again in a moment. |
| Only the GM of … can remove "…". | You play this character, but the GM made it, so only the GM can delete it. |
| That character could not be deleted. | The delete didn't go through. Try again. |
Recent rolls, part by part
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Rolls | Opens and closes the list. Hover text Recent rolls. It sits in the header next to Edit, and only on a character you opened from your dashboard. On a phone it's a button with three lines. The number on it counts the rolls in the list. |
| Recent rolls | The list, newest first. On a computer it opens at the bottom right of the screen; on a phone it slides up from the bottom. |
| Each roll | What you rolled and the total, the time you rolled it, and the dice and bonuses that made the total. A roll you sent as Self is marked Private roll. |
| Clear | Empties the list. It shows once there's a roll to clear. |
| Cross | At the top of the list, beside Clear: closes it. Esc closes it too. |
| Rolls you make on this sheet show up here. | The list is empty. |
The list keeps your last 20 rolls, and only until you close the page. It isn't saved anywhere: reloading the page, or opening another character, starts it empty.
