Every character sheet has two views: the Form View, a tabbed layout for any screen, and the Canvas view, drawn on artwork you click to roll.

For: Game Masters and players · Plan: Free · 3 minutes · What it's for: Character sheets

Both views show the same character with the same numbers: only the look changes, so use whichever you find easier to read. The Form View is the everyday one, and the only one on a phone. The Canvas view looks like a printed character sheet, and suits a campaign where the Game Master (GM) has designed a sheet to match.

The Form View

The Form View is where sheets open, for everyone. It groups the sheet into tabs, such as the main page, spells, items and progression, and fits itself to your screen. On a computer it covers almost the whole screen; phones always use it, and there it fills the screen.

Click a skill, a save, an ability or an attack to roll it; right-click (or long-press on a phone) for roll options. A save, or saving throw, is a roll to resist something, such as a trap or a spell. See Your sheet at the table.

The Canvas view

The Canvas view shows the sheet on one or two pages of artwork, front and back, with the values placed on it. It needs a sheet with artwork, and a computer.

  • To switch, click Canvas view at the top of the Form View. Form View switches back.
  • RollQuest remembers which view you last used, in this browser.
  • Click a value or a marked area to roll it. Right-click for options: who to send it to (Everyone, Self or GM only), how to roll it (Flat, Advantage or Disadvantage), and a Situational modifier, a bonus or penalty for this roll only. Then click Roll. Advantage rolls two d20s (twenty-sided dice) and keeps the higher; disadvantage keeps the lower.
  • Switch page turns the sheet over, and the zoom buttons (or Ctrl -, Ctrl 0 and Ctrl +) zoom it.

If you don't see Canvas view, the sheet has no artwork yet. Most sheets start that way: the GM adds artwork. See Design a Canvas sheet.

Note: the Canvas view isn't available in 5e Compatible (2014) games.

In-game mode

In-game mode floats your sheet over the board, so you can play with the map still in view. The board is the map in the middle of the screen, where the tokens stand. Use in-game mode during play, when you want to roll from your sheet and still watch what's happening. It has its own Form and Canvas switch.

  • Players: click the tab with your character's name at the bottom left of the screen.
  • Right-click a token (a character's figure on the board) and choose Open Character Sheet.
  • Or click In Game at the top of a sheet, when it's there.

Its small toolbar has:

  • Locked / Unlocked: unlock the sheet to edit values, draw and place markers.
  • Pen, Marker and Eraser, for notes on a Canvas sheet.
  • Flip the sheet, zoom, Pop out and Exit.

See Pop out your sheet.
