Give the items in your homebrew pack a picture, from RollQuest's own library or one you upload, so they look like the built-in items on your players' sheets.

For: Game Masters · Plan: Pro · 6 minutes

Every built-in item you can use in RollQuest has a painted picture, which shows beside its name on the character sheet and on its card on a sheet that plays items as cards (see Inventory and money). Your own items start without one: a sheet shows only their name. Item pictures in My Homebrew gives them pictures too, without editing the pack file.

Plan: homebrew is on Pro. Item pictures need the same plan and a verified email address, like creating or editing a pack.

Open Item pictures

  1. In a game you created, open the menu (the three lines at the top left) and click My Homebrew under Game Master tools.
  2. Find your pack and click Item pictures, beside Edit and Fork.

The Item pictures window opens, titled with the pack's name. (Its own text calls your pack a kit.) It lists every inventory item in the pack, with its picture, or its first letter if it has none, and its kind, such as item or weapon. Filter items finds one by name.

My Homebrew, then Item pictures on a pack's row: the window lists its three items, none with a picture yet.

Choose a picture from the library

The library holds the pictures of RollQuest's built-in items, from every game system: nearly 3,000 weapons, potions, spells, tools and more.

  1. Click Choose from library on the item's row.
  2. Type in Search pictures, such as lantern. Set narrows it to one game system's pictures, such as 5-5e or ashfall, with how many each has.
  3. Click a picture. You're back at the list, and the row shows the new picture and New picture, not saved yet.

Back to items returns without choosing. With nothing found, the window says No pictures match. Try another word or set.

Choose from library on the Glowstone Lantern: search lantern, click a picture, and the row says New picture, not saved yet.

Upload your own picture

  1. Click Upload on the item's row and choose an image: a PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF, up to 8 MB.
  2. RollQuest crops it to a square from the middle and makes it small, then puts it on the row with New picture, not saved yet.

A file of another type says A picture must be a PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF., and a bigger one A picture can be 8 MB at most. A picture you upload stays yours: another person's pack can't use it.

Save your pictures

Nothing is saved until you click Save, which counts your changes, such as Save (2). Cancel closes the window and drops them. While you have changes that aren't saved, clicking outside the window or pressing Esc doesn't close it, so you can't lose them by accident. With nothing changed, the window says Nothing has changed yet, so there is nothing to save.

Upload on the Ember Ward Amulet: the picture lands on its row. Save (2), and the pack's row says Revision 2.

Saving is an edit of the pack, so it makes a new revision, as Edit does. A game you've bound the pack to stays on the revision it's pinned to, so:

  • Move the game to the new revision, and players who take the item from then on get its picture.
  • Re-stamp the game's sheets, and characters who already hold the item get it too.

See Put your pack on a table.

Change or remove a picture

  • Remove takes an item's picture off: the row then says Picture removed, not saved yet.
  • Undo puts back what the item had before your change.
  • Choose or upload again to replace a picture.

Then click Save.

A built-in item's picture

You can't change the picture of RollQuest's own items. To use a built-in item with another picture, copy it into a pack of your own with Fork (see Copy rows (Fork)), then give the copy a picture here. The copy keeps the built-in picture until you change it. It's your item, with its own key, so players take it from your pack.

Pictures in the pack file

A picture is stored in the item's meta, as image. You don't need to write it yourself, but you'll see it when you Edit the pack, and you can copy it from one item to another:

"meta": {
  "image": "/pack-art/5-5e/GEAR_LANTERN_HOODED.webp?v=aa9424ab",
  "description": "A brass lantern with a warm stone in place of oil."
}

It must be a picture from the library or one you uploaded. Anything else, such as a link to a picture on another website, is refused with ITEM_IMAGE_INVALID: choose or upload it again in Item pictures. See When a pack is refused.

The Item pictures window, part by part

Part What it does
Item pictures: and the pack's name The window's title.
Close Closes the window. Any changes you haven't saved are dropped.
Filter items Shows only the items whose name or key contains what you type.
The picture, or a letter The item's picture now, including a change you haven't saved.
Name and kind The item's name, and its kind, such as item, weapon or power (a spell). New picture, not saved yet or Picture removed, not saved yet follows a change; Refused marks a picture RollQuest wouldn't save.
Choose from library Opens the library to pick a built-in picture.
Upload Uploads a picture of your own.
Remove Takes the picture off. Only on an item that has one.
Undo Drops your change to this item. Only after a change.
Cancel and Save Close without saving, or save every change at once.

If the pack changed since you opened the window, such as in another tab, nothing is saved: the window reloads the pack and keeps your picture changes, so you can check them and save again. A pack with no inventory items says This kit has no inventory items yet, so there is nothing to give a picture.
